Elephant Nature Park

In this area which abounds with elephant parks and camps, this is the only one which rescues mistreated elephants, allows them heal and to live naturally in their self-chosen family groups. The emphasis is on rescue and conservation rather than ‘shows’ or training. Lots of rescue dogs and cats also live at the centre, apparently at ease with their giant neighbors.

Prepare to be moved to tears by the obvious happiness of the elephants, saved from the horrendous conditions they had previously endured working or performing. Enjoy feeding them, and then wade into the river to bathe them. Watch them inter-connect and display their obvious affection for each other. Suitable for all ages including young children or retirees. Sensitive souls can enjoy the animals and the amazing scenery without watching the optional video which shows the immensely cruel training methods traditionally used (If you prefer to sit this out  you can spend a quiet half hour just contemplating the elephants as they rest after lunch).

Traveller’s Reviews of Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai

2 days was not enough time

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 ★★★★½

Go for the week package if you really want a hands on experience with the ellie’s!!! Two days was enough to learn about what happens at the park and lets you feed and bathe these gracious creatures for a very small price. Stay longer!!

Life changing experience

Rating: 5 of 5 ★★★★★

My week at the park was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I learnt so much about the plight of the Asian elephant and was inspired by these beautiful animals. Highlights included the walk up to elephant haven in the hills, sitting under a baby elephant and the awesome food! The accommodation is very basic but what you would expect from a place in the middle of nowhere. I would highly recommend a visit to the park if you want to learn about a new culture and yourself.

Volunteering at the Elephant Nature Park

Rating: 4 of 5 ★★★★☆

The most amazing experience. To be able to give back in some way for such a worthy project is immeasurable. They provide very comfortable cabins with ensuites. Food was excellent. The time with the elephants, and the 75 dogs cannot be put in to words. Highly recommend for anyone that loves animals. Especially good for kids. There are no Elephant shows or rides just enjoying seeing elephants enjoying themselves, after the miserable lives they have had. Same with the dogs. They are all extremely friendly. What could be better!! Also the ladies from the nearby village will come in to the nature park to give you a massage for the cheapest price we paid any where in Thailand. Met wonderful people. We have plans to go back. You can do just a day visit as well. But if you have the time, recommend staying. They organise stays for what ever length of time you like.

A tear in my eye

Rating: 4.5 of 5 ★★★★½

Wow, what a great job they are doing at the Chiang Mai Elephant Nature Park. We had booked another trip, that included an elephant ride which i canceled when i found this one, and so glad i did. No riding, soccer or painting at this one, or you can see are elephants free to roam where they want. We fed them and walked with them and you sit for hours just watching. To see these animals that had previously been mistreated gave much joy and that tear in my eye, why would you go or see anything else than elephants roaming free. What a clean place as well, from the amenities to the dining area everything was clean, and lunch amazing with so much to eat and the variety a plenty. Our guide Shaun was very knowledgeable and friendly. There was an elephant there that has a broken back from breeding too much, but looked happy just to be in a place like this, her name Mae Do, which we sponsored her for food. We as travelers have a choice to see what we want, and lets hope that we choose the right places.
