Thai Elephant Home – Chiang Mai, Thailand

Established in 2005, the Thai Elephant Home is the most eco-friendly elephant home in its area. Our elephants are well cared for and happy, and this shows in our visitor experience. At this home, you do not just get a chance to ride an elephant, but to really spend time with it in its natural environment. The profits made from the home are invested into saving the local jungle. We buy areas of the jungle that have been destroyed by elephants left to forage for their own food. We replace the dead vegetation, and protect it while it grows. Almost every customer that comes to our home gets the opportunity to plant a tree in the area to contribute to our reforestation project.

Here at Thai Elephant Home you will learn to ride and command elephants, bathe with them and play in the mud with them. Unlike other similar program in the area we guarantee your own elephant for the day. Learn the quirks and behaviors of your own elephant. Joe and the staff will help you learn to command the elephant and after a day you will feel like a professional mahout as your elephant responds to you and takes you safely back to the Thai Elephant Home. After a long day of riding in the jungle, come back to the house and relax, enjoy a shower and fresh fruit, and learn how you can help with the reforestation project or elephant rescue!

Traveller’s Reviews of Thai Elephant Home Chiang Mai

Amazing experience

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 ★★★★½

We chose the Thai Elephant Home as we wished to have an “up close and personal” experience with the elephants. We weren’t disappointed and had one of the most memorable days of our lives.
We went with our 2 sons aged 6 and 10, who really loved it too. It’s not for the faint hearted as you are on your elephant for maybe 3 hours walking in total, and that is quite tiring as you are riding bare back.

The staff make the day, and are really friendly. There is a lovely laid back atmosphere. No lectures, but they do tell you anything you want to know. It’s more about the physical experience of being with the elephants. You learn how to command them, take them to a mud bath and swim in the river with them. The countryside you walk through is beautiful and you leave the beaten track of the riverside where most of the elephant attractions are.
It’s expensive but apparently profits go to environmental projects such as replanting the jungle.

A Life changing experience in Chiang Mai

We were picked up at our hotel at 9:30am and were off to the elephant home. We were given coffee or tea and a briefing about the elephants. Then we were able to change into our “mahouts” clothing. The staff at the Thai elephant home were so friendly and accommodating. I had no idea what was about to happen. We walked down to feed the elephants, which were intimidating at first, but beautiful friendly animals. We had a photographer walk the trek with us, which was great because we didn’t have to worry about taking pictures.

The best part for me was bathing with the elephants in the river after giving them a black mud spa treatment! After the trek, they provided us towels and a shower. They also had a great lunch for us half way through the trek! We were back to our hotel by 5pm, but I wished I had stayed the night. This was a memorable experience and we have made friends for life!

An experience that shouldn’t be missed

I highly recommend this elephant adventure! They picked us up, took us to the elephant home, taught us how to ride the elephants, and took us home again.
We had a lot of time to work with the elephants. I liked that we got to ride them without a bench and were able to play in the mud and water (don’t worry, if you don’t want to do this part, you can just watch). Recommend it!!!!
