Getting to Koh Lanta

.

Your journey to Ko Lanta will eventually take you through one of Ko Lanta’s local transit cities, Krabi, Trang, Phi Phi or Phuket depending on your entry point into Thailand.

Krabi is the most convenient gateway to Ko Lanta if coming from Bangkok, and if arriving from Phuket, transfers can be either via Phi Phi Island or Krabi. Trang also serves as a regional transit point for those coming from the South.

Listed below are the different modes of transport that you can use to reach Koh Lanta. Please note that if your arrival time is late in the day, the local minibus or public passenger ferries scheduled for Ko Lanta may have ceased.

Koh Lanta ferry and road routes

Popular Koh Lanta ferry and road routes from Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi

Minivans from Krabi / Ao Nang to Koh Lanta

Minivans run from Krabi/Ao Nang to Koh Lanta every hour from 07:00 to 17:00.  The trip takes approximately 2.5 hrs, which includes waiting time at 2 car ferries en-route. Note that during peak times the ferry waiting time can be long.

Minivans can be booked at any guesthouse in Krabi or Ao Nang and cost about 300 baht, with children under 12yrs often half price.  This includes hotel pick-up and drop off.

Minivans from Phuket via Krabi to Koh Lanta

Minivans (and buses) travel the 176klms from Phuket to Krabi along highway 402 and 4 taking 2-3 hours for the trip.  Often the vans will stop off at Ao Nang or Krabi Town or the airport before continuing on to Koh Lanta.

Note that if taking this route from Phuket that consideration needs to be given to the ferry crossings between Krabi and Lanta as they do not operate 24hrs/day.  Ferries operate 07:00 – 22:00 daily.

Ferries from Krabi/Ao Nang to Koh Lanta

Passenger ferries depart from both the pier in Krabi Town and Ao Nang (via Railay) twice a day from Mid October til May each year when the seas are calm.  Note this schedule does vary often depending on traffic volume and sea conditions.  The trip takes approximately 2 hours and cost 400 baht ex Krabi / 470 baht ex Ao Nang and Railay.  There are no ferries during the low season (May – October)

Update Feb 2011 – Ferry service possibly reduced to morning schedule only.

Ferries from Phuket and Phi Phi Island to Koh Lanta

Passenger ferries depart twice a day either from Phuket (Rasada Pier) or Phi Phi Island.  The timetable is such that the ferry departing Phi Phi Island leaves shortly after the one arrives from Phuket.  So if originating from Phuket you will need to hop ferries once you arrive at Phi Phi.

Transit time from Phuket to Phi Phi Island is approximately 2hrs, and a further 90 minutes on to Koh Lanta.  Waiting time between ferries at Phi Phi is normally 30-60 minutes.
