Catching the bus to Koh Samet

Koh Samet is a little off the normal tourist route when traveling through Thailand but it needn’t be. Koh Samet is a delightful little island just three and a half hours from Bangkok and getting to Koh Samet from Bangkok is easily done by using the local bus.

Where To Catch the Bangkok to Koh Samet Bus

The Koh Samet bus is one of the easiest local buses to catch. To get to the bus station, take the sky train from anywhere on the Sukhumvit line and get off at Ekamai station. The Ekamai Southern Bus Station is right next to the sky train.

Purchasing Tickets for the Koh Samet Bus

Getting a ticket to Ban Phe (Koh Samet pier) is as simple as going into the bus station itself.  When you get to the Ekamai Southern Bus Station, make sure you actually go in to the ticket office to purchase your ticket as there are some rogue bus operators at Ekamai Station selling tickets outside for their slow buses which can take 8-9 hours to reach Rayong. The blue and white buses run every hour or so, which means if you miss one you don’t have long to wait for the next one.

Sometimes snacks and a bottle of water are included in your ticket price, however if you need to purchase snacks or a drink for the 3.5 hour journey, there are lots of small food stalls at the station.

Bus Ticket Price From Bangkok to Koh Samet

Arriving in Ban Phe

Ban Phe is a small ocean-side town and the stepping off point to Koh Samet. Once you get off the bus, walk to the pier and take the next boat to Koh Samet. They run every 15-30 minutes and the cost for a 30 to 45 minute minute ferry ride is 50 baht. The last ferry boat from Ban Phe to Koh Samed is at 5.00 pm and the last speed boat departs at 6.00 pm.

Only buy a one-way ticket, as there’s no discount on round-trip tickets and you won’t have to worry about losing it or finding that your ticket isn’t valid for the most convenient return ferry.

Note: The ticket sellers may state that you must buy your national park ticket from them also but this can be done at the gate as you enter the park. They may also state that you cannot buy the return from the island, and must buy it at the Ban Phe pier. This is not true. Only buy a one-way ticket at Ban Phe pier. If you arrive after the ticket office is closed you will not have to pay the entry fee.
