Phi Phi Island Transport

Getting to Phi Phi Island

The only way to get to Phi Phi Island is by boat, either from Phuket or from Krabi. Ferries and speed boats make the trip from both locations.

Ferry Services

The most economical way to get to Phi Phi is on one of the public ferries. The ferries leave from Rassada Pier in Phuket at 8:30 and 13:30 each day and cost 400 – 450 baht. The trip takes between 1 ½ and 2 hours and drops you at the pier at Ton Sai Bay. When you arrive in Phi Phi, you will normally have to walk to your hotel from the pier. Most places in “town” are no more than 15 minutes walk away. If you are staying on other beaches, from Hat Yao to the northern tip of the island, you will need to take a longtail boat to reach your final destination. Simply talk to one of the waiting longtail boat drivers who will take you where you wish to go.

Ferries from Krabi depart from the new Klong Jilard Pier about 3 km outside Krabi Town at 09.00, 10.30 and 15.00.  Free transfer to the pier should be included in the price of your ticket. The journey to Phi Phi takes about 1.5hrs and cost 400baht.  A ferry service to Phi Phi Island also departs from Ao Nang at 09.00.

Not all ferries are of equal quality so prices will vary. Andaman wave master is the only company that will take you for free to the north of Phi Phi island after the stop at Tonsai pier. The Sea Angel ferries are quite nice with big flat screen TVs and refreshments. These are sold online as first class ferries.

Please note that the ferry times and prices do fluctuate depending on the operator/agent or season so always confirm the when booking.

Speed Boat

Your own private speedboat is the quickest and most convenient way to get to Phi Phi Island. Hop on board and away you go without the bother of waiting for other passengers. You will cut your travel time in half and can be on the island in as little as 45 minutes, relaxing and enjoying the breathtaking scenery. Speedboats are also able to drop you right at your Koh Phi Phi accommodation, bypassing Tonsai Bay and reducing your travel time even more.

The downside to the speedboats is their cost. Expect to pay at least 1000 baht per person assuming you can barter well. Of course there are also bigger speedboats that hold up to 20 passengers and if you have a large party you can cut the cost per person substantially by chartering these larger speedboats.

Speed Boat Day Trips from Phuket

Several companies operate speed boat day trips to Phi Phi Island with costs ranging from 3000 baht and up.  A typical itinerary would be:

  • 08.00 Hotel pick-up and transfer to the pier.
  • 09.00 Depart pier for Phi Phi Island.
  • 10.00 – 16.00 Visit Phi Phi Island, Maya Bay, Monkey Beach and surrounding bays for exploring and snorkeling.  Lunch and mask/snorkel and drinking water provided.
  • 17.30 Arrive back at Phuket and transfer to hotel.

Note that pregnant passengers and those with back problems are normally prohibited from the speed boat trips due to the bumpy nature of the ride. (Hint, the rear of the boat is more comfortable than the front!)
