Karon Beach Guide – Phuket

-
.

Phuket MapKaron Beach features a long stretch of squeaky white sand and is less hectic than Patong. This beach is the first one south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland.

Located just 10 minutes drive south of Patong, Karon is the second largest of Phuket’s main tourist beaches. Karon is among the cleanest and most beautiful of all the Phuket beaches but has very little natural shade. You options are either to give in and pay whatever the guy renting chairs and umbrellas is asking (do not pay more than 200B for a full day) or slap on litres of sunscreen.

Unfortunately during the monsoon season (April til October) the water at Karon Beach becomes rough and is frequently too dangerous for swimming, especially for children. If there are red flags flying on the beach you’ll need to go south to Kata Beach or Nai Harn beach where the sea is calmer most of the year.

South of Karon is Kata. Only a small headland separates these two, and they are often spoken of as one place, Kata-Karon. From Karon beach there is a regular daytime bus service to and from Phuket Town. The trip takes about an hour and costs about 25baht each way.

Here’s our list of Phuket’s best beaches:

  • Bang Tao – north of Patong, Bang Tao has a soft white sand beach
  • Kamala Beach – a quieter beach to the north of Patong
  • Karon Beach – the second most developed beach after Patong
  • Kata Beach – a clean, but busy tourist beach with good surf
  • Laem Sing Beach – a small bay with stunning views, between Kamala and Surin Beach
  • Nai Harn – a quiet beach (perhaps the best) in the south, near Phromthep Cape
  • Patong Beach – the largest beach resort, known for its nightlife and shopping
