Hat Yai Stainless Steel Temple

People often get “templed out” when traveling througout Thailand but there are temples which should not be missed, no matter how many you have visited. One such example is the White Temple in Chiang Rai, and another being Chedi Traiphop Thaimongkhon or the Stainless Steel Temple in Had Yai. Although it is not actually a temple and there are no monks in residence, this pagoda structure is a very beautiful and interesting place to visit.

Chedi Thaimongkhon, is located on Ko Hong Mountain behind the Prince of Songkla University.  The Stainless Steel Temple can easily be reached by car.  To get to the pagoda, head down Bpunagun Road (the road that runs alongside the university) and turn left when you see a sign with a picture of the pagoda.  The 2km road leading up to the pagoda is quite narrow and steep but easily accessed by a normal vehicle, however a tuk tuk carrying a few passengers may have some difficulty.

At 6pm every evening the pagoda lights are turned on, transforming the pagoda from a stainless steel structure into a magnificent crystal pagoda.  An ideal time to visit Chedi Thaimongkhon is just before sunset as the mountain top offers views of a spectacular sunset on a good day.

Viewing this pagoda at night is a must.
