Getting to Wat Doi Suthep

The easiest way to visit Wat Doi Suthep is to book a package tour in Chiang Mai. If you are an independent traveler, you can drive there via Huai Kaeo Road which leads out of the northwest corner of Old Chiang Mai.

Public transport: Look for songtheaws (red-color pick-up trucks) going to Doi Suthep. They can be found in front of Chiang Mai University and in front of Chiang Mai Zoo.  The trip should cost about 30 baht one way and will leave when full.  Alternatively, you can hire the whole songthaew for 150 baht one way. Tuk tuk are not allowed to go to Doi Suthep.

Once inside the temple grounds, visitors must be appropriately dressed and take off their shoes.  Within the site are pagodas, statues, bells and shrines. The original copper plated chedi is the most holy area of the temple grounds.
